Name: Charlotte Hutchins aka Lottie
Title: PR Manager
Education: University of Surrey, Bachelor of Science in Sociology
PR experience: safety, technology, music and entertainment
Strength: writing and team leading
For me, PR was one of those jobs that I didn’t really realise was a job. To this day I still struggle in explaining what it is and what exactly it is I do. “It’s sort of a mix of writing, marketing and I speak to the media everyday and I create the strategy and plan the communication for companies and…”
“So, marketing?” Sure.
Truth be told, PR has evolved and intermingled so much with other specialist fields such as advertising, digital marketing and copywriting, that the lines have blurred. But, that’s also what is so great about PR. In the words of Forrest Gump, PR is “like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”
At C8, you’ll find it’s not dissimilar. It was C8’s integrated approach and array of service offerings that first attracted me to the agency.
Game-changing PR campaigns
When applying for the role and whilst completing my due diligence, I was impressed by the big hitters in tech and cybersecurity that the agency had on its roster. As I trawled deeper I read about the C8’s existing campaigns with the likes of Carbon Black, Recycling Technologies and BitSight, achieving a multitude of top tier trade and national coverage. “Yup,” I thought “small but mighty.”
The first C8-er I met was the legendary Taz Mufti, Associate Director. I interviewed with Taz and we discussed the team, what’s on the horizon and the agency’s ambitious plans for growth. I was impressed by the agency’s attitude towards flexible working and work/life balance and inspired by C8’s origin story and how the agency’s Managing Director, Paula Elliott, built the business from the ground up to the successful company that it is today.
I had my second interview with Paula, Taz and the Deputy Managing Director, Michael Bartley, who grilled me on my experiences, ideas and vision for the agency… needless to say it went well and it wasn’t too long until I received the call that I was in. Result!
A positive workplace culture
Before I even officially joined the C8 team, I was invited to its media event in London celebrating C8’s 15 years in business, and its QBR (Quarterly Business Review) that saw us detect our way out of a Sherlock Holmes-esque escape room. It was a bundle of fun, and I think the best way to meet the wider team before getting stuck in.
Since then, I’ve fully immersed myself in all things disruptive-tech and found my footing rather quickly. My first day saw the excitement of the Information Commissioner’s Office’s (ICO) announcement of its first intention to fine under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – a whopping £183 million to British Airways for a 2018 breach compromising the personal data of approximately half a million customers. The team was abuzz hitting the phones selling-in client commentary about the fines and what it meant for compliance and data protection moving forward.
In addition, during my first week I leaped into the deep end working on a number of research project-related tasks and joined a couple of out-of-office visits to meet with clients onsite. It’s fair to say there is never a dull – or quiet – moment and always a chance to be proactive and uncover new opportunities for the organisations we work with.
Well, believe it or not, it’s been three months now since I first joined C8 and already I feel like part of the furniture. I am really enjoying working with the clients across the accounts that I am on, and I’m learning something new and scarily technical every day. There are lots of perks to working at C8, but without a doubt it’s the cogs of the machine that spark the day-to-day joy. It’s the best team of individuals and I couldn’t ask for a better bunch of people to work with.
I look forward to the next chapter of my career at C8, who knows what it will bring?
