Why Now Is the Time to Start Planning for 2027

September 8, 2026By Paula ElliottInsights

As the summer holidays come to an end and children head back to school and students return to college and university, it’s hard to believe we’re already talking about 2027. Yet for many organisations, planning cycles and budget discussions are already underway.

One of the biggest mistakes I see businesses make is treating budget planning as a finance exercise rather than a strategic one. By the time budgets are finalised, it’s often too late to influence priorities, align stakeholders or secure investment behind the initiatives that will matter most and move the needle in the year ahead.

It may feel early to be talking about 2027, but organisations that plan ahead consistently outperform those that don’t. Research has found that companies with written business plans grow 30% faster, demonstrating the importance of aligning strategy, budgets and execution early.

Whether it’s launching a new product, entering a new market, building brand awareness, investing in thought leadership research or supporting a funding round, the organisations that extract the greatest value from their communication programmes are usually the ones that start early. They align business objectives, communications, marketing and sales priorities before budgets are locked, not after the fact.

For communications leaders, it’s also the right moment to evaluate what worked in 2026 and what didn’t. Which campaigns drove meaningful business outcomes? Which events delivered value and more importantly generated leads? Where did you generate influence, pipeline, awareness or engagement? And just as importantly, what should you stop doing? What should you continue doing? And what should you start doing? Were there activities on your agenda for 2026 that you just didn’t manage to get over the line? Should you prioritise these in the year ahead?

The external environment continues to move quickly, particularly across technology, AI and cybersecurity. This means the conversations you want to own in 2027 need to start taking shape now.  The most successful organisations don’t wait until January to decide what they want to achieve. They use the final quarter of the year to align budgets, priorities and resources so they can start the new year with momentum rather than spend the first quarter playing catch-up. Before you know it, Easter will arrive and another quarter has gone by.

At C8, some of our most successful client programmes begin during this planning phase. Getting us involved early allows us to help shape the strategy, identify the moments that matter, build realistic plans and ensure budgets are aligned to business outcomes from the outset, rather than retrofitted later.

2027 may feel a long way off, but the planning starts now. The earlier you align budgets, messaging and business objectives, the greater the impact. It’s also the best time to bring partners like C8 into the conversation to help shape strategy rather than simply execute it.
